Free, embeddable tools and data references for understanding grayanotoxin (GTX) levels in mad honey. Educational only: not medical or safety advice.
Grayanotoxin Dose Calculator
Enter a concentration and serving size to calculate the total GTX dose, see which risk band it falls in, and compare it to the EFSA reference point.
- Inputs: concentration (mg/kg), serving size (g), body weight (kg)
- Outputs: total dose in mg, risk band, and % of EFSA reference point
- Live marker on a colour-coded Trace / Low / Moderate / High scale
Reported Grayanotoxin Concentrations
Laboratory-measured GTX I and III ranges from real mad honey samples, plotted against the risk bands. Shows how unpredictably potency varies batch to batch.
- GTX I: 0.75 to 64.86 mg/kg; GTX III: 0.25 to 63.99 mg/kg (Ahn et al., 2022, Nepal)
- Close to 90-fold spread between the weakest and strongest positive samples
- Bar chart, data table, and EFSA context all on one page
Mad Honey Poisoning Case Log
Every publicly reported case of mad honey poisoning since 2010 that could be traced to a health authority or a medical journal: one row per person, each linked to its source.
- 73 people treated in 8 countries, 2010 to 2026; no deaths recorded
- Filter by country, honey origin, how the honey arrived, and source
- Download the data as a CSV, free to reuse under CC BY 4.0
The dose calculator and the concentrations chart are freely embeddable via iframe, and each page includes copy-paste embed code. The case log data is free to reuse under CC BY 4.0. Educational use only: EFSA found health concerns for acute toxicity at the concentrations measured in mad honey, and is 75% or more certain that 0.05 mg/kg (GTX I and III combined) is protective for all age groups against acute poisoning; that figure does not cover other grayananes or genotoxicity.
